Dermal Fillers
The products we use at Glo Aesthetics are composed of hyaluronic acid, a hydrating and plumping compound which is naturally occurring in our skin. The product is “cross-linked” to help it keep its shape when it is injected under the skin, which can lift, smooth and contour the area as needed.
Dermal fillers come in varying consistencies. They range from soft and mouldable; suitable for fine lines, lip definition, under the eyes, to a thicker filler which holds its shape for contouring the cheekbone or chin. The majority of our treatments use the Juvederm range of dermal fillers.
You can rely on your aesthetics practitioner to choose the product with the right consistency to suit the area being injected and your skin type, to get the most natural result. We offer the following treatments with dermal filler:
Lip enhancements
Cheek contouring
Nasolabial fold
Marionette lines
What will happen at your appointment?
Before the procedure, your medical practitioner will fully review your General Medical Questionnaire and may have some questions for you to ensure Dermal Fillers are safe for you. They will explain to you about possible side effects, aftercare and follow up, and will take time to answer your questions. Some photographs will be taken for insurance purposes. These are not shared unless you agree to this.
You may have some numbing cream applied to your skin, which will take 15- 20 minutes to start working.
Your skin will be carefully cleaned prior to the injections.
The injections are comfortable for most patients. In fact many people opt to go without the numbing cream as it makes the process quicker. This part will take from 10-20 minutes.
Afterwards your skin will be cleaned again. Your practitioner will explain to you what to do in the next few hours and days, and give you an aftercare leaflet to take with you.
Some people are surprised to hear that they will need to avoid direct sun, alcohol and exercise in the days after their treatment, but it’s so important to follow the aftercare guidance to reduce the risk of side effects and to get the best result.
Possible side effects
You may have some moderate redness, swelling, skin tightness for a few days following the procedure. It is normal to have some lumps in the areas injected due to the product placed there, which needs time to disperse over the next 1 to 48 hours. Bruising can happen. Don’t worry, it doesn’t mean something has gone wrong, it just means a tiny blood vessel has burst and the blood has risen to the surface. It will usually fade over 5-7 days.
Rare side effects include infection, allergic reaction, anaphylaxis, blocked blood vessels.

What’s normal after a procedure?
Due to the anaesthetic in the gel, you may feel numbness or tingling immediately after the procedure and have some moderate swelling, redness, bruising and tenderness over areas treated. Some people experience a dull ache or tenderness over the treated areas which subsides between 48-72 hours. Mild non-painful swelling can last for up to 2 weeks. Bruising is usually visible initially, then more obvious the next day before fading over 7 to 14 days. A small minority of bruises can last for 4-6 weeks.
How to protect your result and reduce side effects:
A clean cool compress can be used if the area is painful or swollen, but do not apply ice directly to the skin as it can cause injury.
For 48 hours after the procedure avoid alcohol consumption, and exposure to direct sunlight or extreme heat i.e. sauna, sun-beds, very hot showers, strenuous exercise. As this may increase discomfort, bruising and swelling.
Try to avoid unnecessary pressure over any areas treated, especially in the first 24 hours.
Avoid facial massages or skin resurfacing until the area has healed fully.
How to reduce the chance of infection:
Avoid touching or washing the area that has been injected for 6 hours.
If you have to touch the area ensure your hands are clean and sanitised.
Sleep with a freshly cleaned pillowcase
Avoid makeup over injection points until the day after the procedure. Ensure your makeup brushes are clean and sanitised.
When to contact us:
Serious complications are rare, but it’s vital you seek urgent review if anything like this occurs:
Swelling, puffiness or lumpiness which one does not fade in the first week with gentle massage.
The filler changes texture and becomes hard, nodular or lumpy, especially if there is redness or tenderness after 48 hours. These symptoms may indicate a need for medical assistance. If you cannot reach us and you feel feverish, unwell, or the symptoms are worsening, please contact your GP or NHS 111.
IMPORTANT: Contact us immediately if you have symptoms of a blocked blood vessel.
If you develop increasing pain near or above the site of injection which is getting worse over time, especially if there is a pale area of skin indicating a lack of blood flow, you should contact us straight away. In rare cases of a blocked blood vessel, an urgent reversal or other medical interventions may be required immediately to prevent scarring. If we are unreachable attendance at accident and emergency is advised. Make contact with us as soon as possible so we may advise other clinicians to help them.
IMPORTANT: Call 999 if you think you are developing Anaphylaxis
This is a life-threatening allergic reaction that may present as swelling in other parts of the body ( hands, feet, eyes, lips, throat), wheezing, fainting, or difficulty breathing.
